Not Reading Levertov
A friend wrote recently, having just attended a Catholic mass in which a Denise Levertov poem was included. The priest went out of his way to note that Levertov was a convert and had once been an Anglican. I have heard many people declare an alliance with the late poet–disaffected Catholics, “affected” Catholics, Unitarian pacifists, and (of course) conservative Evangelical protestants. I claim her too … but only sometimes; and only for the poems or lines (marriage, that communion which “throbs in the teeth” or “Where is the angel for me to wrestle? / No driving snow in the glass bubble, / but mild September.”) trued to brain my crown.
